How does it Work? – Rehoming your Akita

If you are looking at this page, then you are likely to be making the difficult decision to re-home your Akita. We know that you will want the best for your pet; as such we would like to ensure that you understand our practices:

* All applicant adopters, those that live with them and their home are fully vetted.
* Follow up communication and visits are carried out, Friends of Akitas Trust (UK) endeavour to remain in contact with adopters throughout the life of their Akita.
* We insist as part of the Transfer of Ownership Contract that (if not already done) Akitas will be spayed or neutered once re-homed, or if possible, prior to re-homing.
* All Akitas in our care receive all necessary veterinary treatment.
* All adoptive owners sign a contract stating that they will care for the Akita, that they will notify the FOA should they no longer be able to look after the dog, ensure that training and socialisation is maintained and that the Akita will always be considered first if other animals are brought into the home.

Procedure

Please contact any of the National Coordinators through the Contact Us page. You will then be sent a form to complete and return. Once received, a representative from FOA will visit you to carry out an assessment and gather information.

This is to make sure that we represent your Akita in the most appropriate way to ensure that he or she receives the best possible home for their situation. It is imperative that you are as honest as possible with us regarding the nature and temperament of your dog.

If it is agreed that your Akita will be rehomed through the FOA, wherever possible we would prefer your Akita to stay with you until a suitable home is found. If this is not appropriate, then we will consider other options to determine the best way forward.

To continue our work, we would appreciate that owners giving up their Akita consider making a donation to our Charity to help cover costs incurred. As a not for profit organisation, we would not exist without kind donations and contribution
