F.O.A Trust (UK) Policies
Policy on Spaying / Neutering
Objective
To determine the Friends of Akitas Trust (UK)’s position with regards to the neutering and spaying of Akita’s in the care of and re-homed through the FOA (UK), and to positively promote neutering and spaying where applicable to reduce the numbers of unwanted Akitas produced through indiscriminate breeding, and decrease the incidence of associated medical / behavioural conditions.
Friends of Akitas Trust (UK) would like to spay / neuter all Akitas in their care; however the fact is that we do not have the funds available to do this. Therefore, first and foremost as outlined below, neutering or spaying of a rescue Akita will be the responsibility of the new owner.
The Policy
1. Neutering / Spaying will be a condition of adoption, detailed on the “Transfer of Ownership” Form (D) which is signed by every new adopter. The new owner will ensure this take place, unless there are bona fide clinical reasons not to do so, and, along with their veterinary surgeon complete and return the Obligatory Spaying / Neutering Form.
2. Comprehensive records will be kept and systems maintained to ensure all eligible Akitas are monitored to ensure compliance with this policy.
3. We will promote neutering of all eligible Akitas within rescue centres and to the wider Akita - owning public.
4. Where funds permit, we will neuter/spay un-neutered/un-spayed Akitas that come into the care of the FOA.
Review
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Friends of Akitas Trust (UK).
