Adopt an Akita

How does it Work? – Applying to Adopt

If you’ve read all of the information on these pages, and you’re still here, then great – it looks as though you have your heart set on an Akita!

We ask that you read the following, and we then need you to fill in an application form. This can be downloaded from the 'downloadable forms' section below or can be requested from any of our National Coordinators.

Please remember that this is not a test! It is simply to establish the most suitable Akita for you and your family. The form asks some questions about you and your home, for example where you live, how many hours a day you work, whether you have any other pets. Once this form has been completed, we ask that you return it to one of National Coordinators – we will then arrange for one of our Area Representatives to visit your house. This is to ensure that you can provide a safe and happy environment for a rescue Akita, that you understand what life may be like with an Akita and provides another opportunity for you to ask any questions that you might have. Our representative will also collect an administration donation of £15.00 – this is to cover our administrative and transportation costs incurred, and an application will not go any further without this.

Once the Area Representative has let the National Coordinator know that the home visit has successfully been carried out, he or she will consider which Akita may be right for you – or which “you” may be right for the Akita! Once FOA has identified which Akita this is, we will ask you to come and meet him or her – if you have another dog in your household, you will need to bring them to meet! Once everyone is happy that all is well, the Transfer of Ownership Paperwork is completed and you may take your adoptive Akita home! Please note that we insist as part of the Transfer of Ownership Contract that (if not already done) Akitas will be spayed or neutered once re-homed.

To help assist with the work of the Friends of Akitas Trust (UK) we also ask that a further donation be made upon adoption. A scale of donations has been devised by the Trust, taking into account our costs, and the potential costs of the adopter, given our spay / neuter contractual requirements. This scale is detailed below, and will be discussed with the National Coordinator prior to you visiting any Akita.

Once you have taken your Akita home, the National Coordinator will keep in touch with you, to make sure that everything is going ok – we may also carry out a follow up visit.

We also hope that you will remain a regular visitor to our site and forum - we aim to provide information, support, friendship and not to mention loads of photos of Akitas!
